Saaya Academy is a Section 8 (non-profit) clinical-academic bridging institution based at the Coimbatore Campus in Tamil Nadu, India. Operating under the governance of a Managing Board and Trust, the Academy was established to solve the structural fragmentation in India's child and adolescent mental health ecosystem. It serves as a specialized higher education institute and professional practitioner guild, bridging the gap between theoretical university psychology education and practical, supervised, ethically governed school counseling.
Vision
To eliminate the systemic competency gap and supervision deficit in child and adolescent mental health across India, creating a nation where every educational institution is staffed by clinically competent, legally compliant, and ethically governed school counseling professionals.
Mission
To train, credential, and deploy high-competency school counselors through an intensive, residency-integrated Postgraduate Diploma in School Counselling (PGDSC). Saaya Academy achieves this by combining rigorous academic coursework, strict 1:5 clinical supervision by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) registered psychologists, real-world school placement networks, and a platform–independent practitioner guild.
Background & Story
Grounded in a 45-year educational trust heritage in South India, Saaya Academy was born out of an in-depth institutional analysis of India's psychological ecosystem. The founders identified three fundamental structural failures:
- The Competency Gap: Psychology graduates leave universities with honors but zero experience sitting across from a child in distress or managing an active crisis.
- The Supervision Deficit: Early-career school counselors operate in complete isolation without clinical directors or supervisors, causing high practitioner anxiety and unmonitored client care.
- The Regulatory Paradox: While clinical therapy is strictly regulated by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), a vast majority of school-based counseling is delivered by general graduates without standardized quality control or protective guidelines.
In response, Saaya Academy benchmarked global gold-standard models—including the ASCA/CACREP framework (United States), BACP (United Kingdom), NIE/MOE (Singapore), PACFA (Australia), and HKPCA (Hong Kong)—to design a dual-track, clinical-academic fellowship tailored specifically to the Indian socio-legal landscape (POCSO Act 2012, MHCA 2017, NEP 2020, and DPDPA Act 2023).
What Does Saaya Do?
Saaya Academy operates a closed-loop, educational engine:
- Delivers the PGDSC Program: A 12-month, 4-semester, 39-credit postgraduate diploma structured under the UGC Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS).
- Embeds 200 Practicum Placement Hours: Provides graduated real-world exposure.
- Enforces Mandatory Safety Gates: Requires candidates to pass standardized clinical-simulation gates (such as the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale [C-SSRS]) before client contact.
- Provides Weekly Clinical Supervision: Guarantees a strict 1:5 supervisor-to-student ratio led by RCI-registered Clinical Psychologists.
- Nurtures a Professional Guild: Operates a platform-independent community of practitioners for peer learning, clinical case huddles, and continuous professional development.
